Estate Planning and the Education and Research Fund

The ACUI Education and Research Fund is honored to be included in the estate planning of several members and friends.

Planned estates of all sizes can help shape the future of ACUI and the profession. For many ACUI members, a gift planned through their estate is the best and easiest way to make a lasting contribution to the Education and Research Fund. Through your will or other estate plan, you can name the Education and Research Fund as a beneficiary of a portion of your estate or particular assets in your estate. An outright gift to the Education and Research Fund, whatever the amount, is free from federal estate taxes.

There are numerous reasons to make a contribution through your estate. A bequest allows you to honor a mentor or loved one while supporting important endeavors like research into the profession and access to ACUI programs by deserving students and professionals. Giving a bequest costs nothing now, but may give you satisfaction knowing that your gift will live on.

The Education and Research Fund would like to honor members who have included us in their estate by including them in the Torchbearer's society.

Types of Gifts in Planned Estates

Cash Bequest: The Education and Research Fund receives a specific dollar amount from your estate.

Bequest of Property: The Education and Research Fund receives specific assets such as securities or real estate.

Residuary Bequest: The Education and Research Fund receives all or a percentage of the remainder of your estate after the payment of any specific bequests and expenses.

Contingent Bequest: The Education and Research Fund becomes the beneficiary only if other beneficiaries are not alive or are unable to accept the bequest.

Retirement Plan: The Education and Research Fund is designated as a beneficiary of your IRA or retirement plan. (Note: To make this gift, you must notify your plan's administrator and a "change of beneficiary" form is typically required.)

Life Insurance: If you own a life insurance policy that is no longer needed by family members, you may want to consider giving it to the Education and Research Fund. You may simply name the Education and Research Fund as the beneficiary of the policy.

Sample Language

Below is some sample language you can consider as you plan your personal estates:

  • To include ACUI in your will: "I bequeath to the Association of College Unions International, a charitable corporation established at Bloomington in the State of Indiana, the sum of [dollars or percentage of estate], to be used for the Education and Research Fund's general purposes."
  • To name ACUI as the beneficiary of part (or all) of the residue of an estate: "I devise and bequeath to the Association of College Unions International, a charitable corporation established by law at Bloomington in the State of Indiana all [or specify a portion] of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, whether real, personal or mixes, however and whenever acquired and wherever located, to be used for the Education and Research Fund's general purposes."
  • To name ACUI as a contingent beneficiary, whereby you can make testamentary gifts to one or more individuals with the assurance that if any predecease the testator, that bequest will come to ACUI: "If any of the above named beneficiaries should predecease me, I then devise and bequeath to the Association of College Unions International, a charitable corporation established by law at Bloomington in the State of Indiana, all the property, real or personal, which said beneficiary or beneficiaries would have received had they survived me."
